Program Statement

We believe that all children are competent, capable, curious and rich in potential. At SWBD, children are encouraged to PLAY as their form of work. SWBD offers a learning environment and programming that is consistent with Ontario Ministry of Education’s policies, pedagogy and curriculum, including How Does Learning Happen? Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years (“HDLH”), we believe children grow and thrive when they feel a sense of Well-Being, Belonging, Expression and Engagement. These foundational conditions are seeded and nurtured through the ELECT (Early Learning for Every Child Today) based program and environment we provide at SWBD.

By playing in an environment where the four foundations of (“HDLH”) is paramount, children make sense of the world through experimentation, trial and error and the guidance of creative adult partners. Our staff has the expertise to acknowledge, support and be excited about that potential in each child. Our trained staffs are the foundation of each classroom and support children’s learning, development through engagement, expression, health and well-being. The teamwork that happens among these caring and responsive adults results in a quality program that allows children to succeed as they engage in active learning and a balance of structure and life long skills.

TODDLER PROGRAM (18months- 2.5years old) Toddlers are busy, busy, busy!

For this reason, we like to keep our toddler groups small, so the class has 10 children and 2 teachers. At this stage, children start to learn more independence and also thrive on the class’s daily routine.

Many children exhibit a language explosion at this time using many new words every day. We help the children at this stage not only to experience the wonders of the environment around them but also to interact and manipulate their environment in a safe and exciting way.

PRESCHOOL PROGRAM  (2.5 - 6 years old) This class focuses on preparing children for Kindergarten

This is done both academically and socially while preserving all of the joy of being in Preschool. Turn-taking, sharing and collaboration are regular parts of the day. Preschool children are delightfully social; we help them navigate the highs and lows that come with first friendships.

Preschool children have terrific ideas of their own that we incorporate into the daily programming. They are also capable of empathy and generosity so we increase the focus on helping build strong characters.
